Can You Watch ITVX in Ireland? What Works Instead, Show by Show

ITVX doesn't stream in Ireland: ITV's own help pages say live and on-demand viewing stops once you're outside the UK, so ITV's big shows reach Ireland on free-to-air Virgin Media channels instead, with Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm on Virgin Media One from Monday to Friday, with the free Virgin Media Play app for live channels and catch-up; EastEnders sits on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, and Channel 4 is the one British streamer that partly works here.

Why won't ITVX work in Ireland?

It comes down to rights. ITV's help centre is plain about it: you can't stream live or on-demand shows on ITVX when you're outside the UK, and Ireland counts as outside. There's no separate Irish version of the app, and signing up for ITVX Premium doesn't change the streaming rule.

The one exception ITV mentions is aimed at British subscribers going on holiday. Premium members can download shows to an Android or iPhone app before they leave the UK and watch those downloads abroad for up to seven days. That's no use if you live here, because you'd need to be in Britain to download anything in the first place.

The good news is that most of what people want from ITVX already airs on Irish channels, often at the same time as ITV1.

Where do ITV shows air in Ireland instead?

Virgin Media Television's channels carry ITV's biggest daily shows in Ireland, and they're free-to-air. The table below covers the British favourites and where they land.

Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm on Virgin Media One line up with ITV1's times in Britain on weeknights. Our night-by-night soap guide has the full line-up and the Virgin Media Three repeat slots, and The Chase page lists all six weekday showings. Virgin Media's guide doesn't label its Chase episodes as new or repeat, so we don't either.

Is Virgin Media Play free?

Yes. Virgin Media Play is Virgin Media Television's own streaming app, and its Irish App Store listing describes a free app with the Virgin Media channels live plus catch-up, used with a free Virgin Media Play account.

The listing names Love Island and Gogglebox Ireland among the shows on it. We couldn't sign in to check how long each ITV soap episode stays up, so treat the catch-up window as not confirmed.

Can you watch BBC iPlayer in Ireland?

No. The BBC's help pages say that, because of rights agreements, you have to be in the UK to stream programmes, download them or watch BBC channels on iPlayer. Downloads made inside the UK can be watched anywhere, but again that only helps visitors from Britain.

For BBC shows, the Irish answer is usually another channel. EastEnders is on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, which RTÉ says are free to watch live or on demand, and The Graham Norton Show moves to Virgin Media One on Saturday nights, a day after BBC One; our Graham Norton in Ireland page has the repeat slots.

Does the Channel 4 app work in Ireland?

Partly, and this is the exception most people miss. Channel 4's help pages say its streaming service is available in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, though not every programme is available here because of rights deals. The Watch Live service is for UK residents only, so in Ireland you get on-demand programmes and downloads, not the live channel.

On television, Channel 4 still broadcasts to Ireland in HD through Sky Ireland, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Eir. None of those is Saorview, so it isn't a free-to-air option here.

What should you use instead of ITVX?

Match the show to its Irish home. For the ITV soaps and The Chase, that's Virgin Media One, Two or Three, with Virgin Media Play for the live channels; Love Island and Gogglebox Ireland are both named on the app's listing. For EastEnders, Fair City and RTÉ's own dramas such as Tall Tales & Murder, it's RTÉ One and RTÉ Player. For Bake Off and other Channel 4 programmes, try Channel 4's own streaming service first.

What won't work is the British app itself, and there's no legal way round that from here. If a British show isn't on an Irish channel at all, the honest answer is that it isn't available to stream in Ireland yet.

If you're in Northern Ireland

You're in the UK, so ITVX, BBC iPlayer and the full Channel 4 service, live channels included, all work as normal.
